Student Inventor Selected for CIC

John Mohyi, college innovator from Michigan State University and CEO of Mohyi Labs was selected as a 2016 Collegiate Inventors Competition (CIC) Finalist. This is the first time MSU has been part of this competition; other 2016 finalist universities include Columbia, Johns Hopkins, and MIT.

CIC is a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame and has been honoring and awarding college innovators for 25 years. Participants work in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the AbbVie foundation to bring finalists to Washington D.C. There, entrants are juged by a panel of National Inventors Hall of Fame Inductees, United States Patent and Trademark Office officials, and AbbVie scientists, competing for more than $100,000 in cash prizes with others who are working on cutting-edge inventions at the country’s finest universities. Entries are showcased at the CIC Expo in November, 2016.

Mohyi Labs is a product development company focused on creating a Bladeless Drone. Featured in Spring 2016 on America’s Greatest Makers on TBS, Mohyi Labs seeks to create a safer, more durable, more stable drone that uses innovative propulsion technology. Mohyi’s Ducted Counter-Vortex Impeller technology seeks to revolutionize the consumer drone industry, logistics and personal transportation. Its patent-pending design works by altering the airflow out of a vortex pattern and converting it into useable thrust. Advantages of the technology include the potential to exceed the efficiencies of existing bladed propulsion and the ability to operate both in the air and aquatic environments.

“Spartan startups have talent and great ideas for making a difference on a global level,” said Paul Jaques, director of student and community engagement at Spartan Innovations. “From the Hatch in East Lansing to a national stage, we’re proud to see so many student entrepreneurs in the spotlight this year.”

Mohyi graduated from Wayne State University in 2011 with bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Psychology, receiving honors for both. He is currently pursuing a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from MSU’s College of Law. He founded or co-founded three companies in addition to Mohyi Labs: Black Ice Beverages LLC, Michigan Central Station Preservation Society, and American Organ Foundation.
