In the 2023 edition of the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, Michigan State University has four disciplines in the top 25, three of which are among the top 10. More than 1,900 universities across 104 countries and regions are listed in the rankings.

MSU is ranked No. 4 in education and No. 5 in communication, marking the sixth straight year MSU ranks in the top five in the world in these two fields. MSU is ranked No. 10 in environmental science and engineering, marking the fifth straight year MSU has ranked in the top 10 globally for this discipline. For the second straight year, MSU is ranked in the top 25 for law, coming in at No. 25 this year.

“MSU scholars are leading and advancing research in their respective fields of study in ways that have an impact on discovery and innovation while contributing to the greater good,” said MSU Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko. “It is rewarding to see these academic disciplines at MSU, one of the top research universities in the world, recognized at this global level.”

The 2023 edition of the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is largely based on publications and citations between 2018 and 2022. Factors are weighted differently based on discipline.

There are five metrics for the 2023 edition, which include:

  • articles in journals with a quartile one, or Q1, journal impact factor
  • articles published in top journals in the discipline
  • category normalized citation impact (for the discipline)
  • International collaboration in research publications
  • number of faculty with a scholarly award in the discipline
