EeroQ, a Chicago-based quantum computing company, has been recognized as Michigan State University’s 2025 Startup of the Year for its revolutionary approach to quantum computing. The company, co-founded by MSU Associate Professor Johannes Pollanen, utilizes a patented chip design featuring individual electrons floating on superfluid helium that works with existing chip fabrication technology. This innovation enables greater scalability with significantly fewer resources and space compared to traditional methods. EeroQ has demonstrated impressive progress by developing the largest scaling architecture for a quantum computer to date, capable of controlling 2,432 electrons, with plans to eventually accommodate up to a million qubits on a single chip. This technology has potential applications in biomedical research, climate modeling, and materials science, positioning EeroQ to accelerate quantum computing commercialization while using standard CMOS technology. About the MSU Innovation Center:
The MSU Innovation Center combines research partnerships, technology transfer, and startup support for MSU faculty who aim to see their research applied to make the world a better place.
Composed of Business Connect, MSU Technologies, and Spartan Innovations, the MSU Innovation Center aims to amplify the impact of faculty research and drive economic growth while positively impacting society to solve real-world challenges with cutting-edge ideas.
Through mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships with the private sector, we connect MSU faculty with companies for corporate-sponsored research collaborations. We also play a key role in facilitating the commercialization and public use of technologies and copyrightable materials, moving MSU’s innovations from the lab to the marketplace. Importantly, we provide significant support for faculty entrepreneurs in establishing startup companies based on technologies developed at MSU.
